Good morning! James opens his letter with one of the most counterintuitive commands in all of Scripture: consider it pure joy when you face trials. Not “try to stay positive” or “look on the bright side.” Pure joy. That’s a high bar.

But James isn’t asking us to pretend trials don’t hurt. He’s asking us to see them through a different lens — the lens of what they produce. Trials test our faith. And tested faith, when it holds, produces perseverance. And perseverance, when it finishes its work, produces maturity — a completeness that can’t come any other way.

The hard season you’re in right now isn’t wasted. It’s working something in you that the easy seasons never could. Hold on. Let perseverance finish its work. The result is worth it.

Lord, help me to see my trials through Your eyes today. I don’t always feel joyful in the hard seasons — but I trust that You are working something good in me. Let perseverance finish its work. Make me mature and complete in You. Amen.
